Closed Deduction Reviews and Safety Net Reviews

Even strong deduction teams may miss recovery opportunities. This can happen when claim volume is high, documentation is delayed, disputes are denied too quickly, internal resources are limited, or deductions are closed before full validation is completed.

A Closed Deduction Review, or Safety Net Review, is a second-pass review of deductions that have already been closed, written off, aged out, or otherwise resolved. The purpose is to identify deductions that may still have recovery opportunities or valuable insights.

A Safety Net Review may uncover:

  • Invalid deductions that were written off
  • Duplicate deductions
  • Deductions closed without complete backup
  • Claims denied without adequate follow-up
  • Customer errors
  • Missed repayments
  • Unsupported compliance or shortage claims
  • Pricing or trade claims requiring additional validation
  • Recoverable deductions overlooked due to workload or aging

Common reasons recovery opportunities are missed:

  • Documentation was not available during the initial review
  • Customer denials were accepted without escalation
  • Related deductions were not reviewed together
  • Workload constraints limited the depth of research
  • Recovery opportunities were overlooked due to aging or prioritization decisions

This type of review can be particularly valuable for companies with high deduction volume, centralized Shared Services operations, limited resources, or significant historical write-offs.

Safety Net Review Concept: A first-pass deduction process may resolve the obvious items or low-hanging fruit. A second-pass review can identify missed recovery opportunities hiding in closed or written-off activity.
